Nirmal Chettri is the latest sensation of national football team. This young man from Sikkim made his first appearance in the Asian Football Confederation Cup in 2010 playing for East Bengal against Syrian club. And who says football is just about scoring goals but saving some like he does in center-back, his position. He is surely made for big league as after a friendly match the famous German football club Bayern Munich manager Gerd Muller noticed him, “East Bengal’s number three was brilliant.”
Nirmal Chettri has been playing for national Under-17 then Under-23 and finally Senior team in 2011 SAFF Championship against Bhutan. After that there is no stopping, now he is a must-have member in the national team and for his latest club Mohun Bagan which he signed in May 2012. Now it is up to him how big he wants to make it for himself as floodgates of opportunities are opening up for him. The legend of Indian football Bhaichung Bhutia is making sure that Nirmal Chettri gets to showcase his talent abroad by helping him out for club trials in Europe. Till now around six Indian players have played or should we say tried their luck abroad but couldn’t do much. We hope things will change with this 22 year old lad. All the best!
